Necromicon (Book of the dead)

Here we have our Necromicon book of the dead from Ash and the evil dead movie. This book can sit silently on the shelf and just look ominous or if you turn it on, it comes to life. The eyes will wander around while the fire effect of the book makes it appear that the pages are on fire. For users who wander a little too close to the book, a motion sensor will trigger the eery sound effects and the book will moan and cackle with a dark voice.

• The actual book was purchased at Hobby Lobby

• Roughly 40 hot glue sticks were then used to mold the book to look as it does now

• A halloween mask was cut up to use the mouth piece and then cardboard was added to the book to shape the eyes and mouth

• Hot glue was added in layers upon layers till the required look was achieved

• Two trebuchet lenses were used to give the eyes more depth

• LED strip was added internally within the book to provide the fire effect around the pages

• Actual papyrus pages were used and weathered with coffee grounds to give the pages that “dingy” look

• Final dry brushing was done to give it the weathered look as well as adding real barb wire

• Including electronics:

  • Raspberry Pi running Adafruit eye software

  • Light sensor

  • Arduino uno running sound output custom code which reacts to a PIR sensor to detect motion near the book

  • When motion is detected, the book will glow red and play spooky sounds

  • Likewise the eyes of the book react to light and the pupils will dilate accordingly
